Key statistics

In June quarter 2024, there were 634,400 tourism jobs. This was:

  • 11,500 (-1.8%) less jobs than March quarter 2024
  • 12,300 (2.0%) more jobs than June quarter 2023
  • 1 in 25 (4.0%) filled jobs in the economy

In June quarter 2024, eight of the 12 tourism industries recorded a fall in jobs. The largest falls were in:

  • Sports and recreation services: down 5,400 (-12.6%)
  • Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services: down 3,000 (-1.5%)
  • Air, water and other transport: down 2,700 (-7.2%)

These were partially offset by an increase in Education and training: up 3,600 (5.7%).

The jobs increase from June quarter 2023 to June quarter 2024 was due to increases in five of the 12 tourism industries. The largest increases were in:

  • Education and training: up 30,000 (80.9%)
  • Travel agency and information centre services: up 4,500 (14.1%)

These were partially offset by decreases in:

  • Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services: down 17,600 (-8.2%)
  • Accommodation: down 3,900 (-5.0%)

The decrease in June quarter 2024 was driven by full-time jobs held by females (down 9,600), whereas the increase from June quarter 2023 to June quarter 2024 was driven by full-time jobs held by males (up 11.300).
