Key statistics

In June quarter 2026, there were 726,300 tourism jobs. This was:

  • 1,200 (-0.2%) less jobs than March quarter 2026
  • 28,300 (4.1%) more jobs than June quarter 2025
  • 1 in 22 (4.5%) filled jobs in the economy.

Key tourism events in Australia, June quarter 2026

  • Easter holiday period in early April
  • Fuel supply shortages, and flight disruptions linked to the Middle East conflict
  • Subsidised public transport initiatives and temporary fuel excise discount

In June quarter 2026, 5 of the 12 tourism industries recorded a decrease in jobs. The largest decreases were in:

  • Sports and recreation services: down 900 (-2.5%)
  • Retail trade: down 900 (-0.7%)
  • Accommodation: down 700 (-0.5%).

These were partially offset by an increase in:

  • Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services: up 1,300 (0.6%).

The 4.1% increase in jobs from June quarter 2025 to June quarter 2026 was driven by increases in 10 of the 12 tourism industries, the largest being:

  • Accommodation: up 20,500 (17.7%)
  • Retail trade: up 2,200 (1.8%)
  • Cultural services: up 2,100 (13.4%).

The decrease in June quarter 2026 was the result of 18,200 less jobs held by females working full-time and 12,300 less jobs held by males working full-time. This was partially offset by 20,800 more jobs held by females working part-time and 8,500 more jobs held by males working part-time.

The increase from June quarter 2025 to June quarter 2026 was the result of 23,400 more jobs held by females working part-time and 5,600 more jobs held by females working full-time.
