Business indicators

• Almost a third of employing businesses (31%) are having difficulty finding suitable staff.
• Nearly half (46%) of all businesses experienced increases in their operating expenses.
• More than two in five businesses (41%) faced supply chain disruptions. This has remained steady since it peaked in January 2022 (47%).

• Company gross operating profits remained relatively unchanged this quarter.
• Wages and salaries rose 1.5%

At 30 June 2025 there were 2,729,648 actively trading businesses in the Australian economy, with 994,178 of these businesses being employing.

In 2024-25 there was a: 

• 2.5% or 66,650 increase in the number of businesses
• 16.4% entry rate, with 437,150 entries
• 13.9% exit rate, with 370,500 exits

In seasonally adjusted terms, the September 2025 monthly business turnover indicator showed: 

• Rises in eleven industries, resulting in a 2.2% rise in the 13-industry aggregate
• The largest rise was in Manufacturing (+7.0%), its highest growth on record.
• Other notable rises were in Mining (+4.0%), Electricity, gas, water and waste services (+2.8%) and Information media and telecommunications (+2.7%)

In trend terms, the 13-industry aggregate for business turnover rose 0.5 per cent in September.

• Total new capital expenditure rose by 6.4%
• Equipment, plant and machinery rose by 11.5%
• Buildings and structures rose by 2.1%
