Key statistics

In seasonally adjusted terms, the May 2025 monthly business turnover indicator showed:

Falls in five industries, resulting in a 0.1% fall in the 13-industry aggregate
The largest falls were in Arts and recreation services (-5.5%) and Manufacturing (-1.3%)
The largest rises were in Electricity, gas, water and waste services (+1.7%) and Wholesale trade (+1.1%)

The 13-industry aggregate grew 0.1% in trend terms for the month of May.

This experimental indicator is derived from Australian Taxation Office (ATO) Business Activity Statements (BAS) turnover data from monthly BAS remitters. It includes 13 of the 19 industry divisions classified according to the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC), 2006.
Monthly BAS reporting covers businesses with GST annual turnover of $20 million or more and a proportion of smaller businesses that report monthly on a voluntary basis.
The estimated monthly changes in business turnover are aligned as closely as is feasible to the Australian System of National Accounts concept of market output. Users should exercise caution in comparing the indicator to other ABS economic outputs due to differences in concepts, scope, coverage, and methods.

Industry detail

In May 2025, five of the 13 industry divisions included in the indicator showed falls in monthly turnover in seasonally adjusted terms. The most notable falls in monthly turnover were seen in:

Arts and recreation services (-5.5%)
Manufacturing (-1.3%)
Retail trade (-0.8%)

The most notable industries that showed rises in May 2025 were:

Electricity, gas, water and waste services (+1.7%)
Wholesale trade (+1.1%)
Accommodation and food services (+1.0%)

Year-on-year, 10 of 13 industry divisions recorded rises in business turnover. The largest rises were recorded in:

Accommodation and food services (+11.9%)
Manufacturing (+8.5%)
Other services (+8.2%)

The industries recording falls in business turnover in May 2025, compared with May 2024 were:

Mining (-4.6%)
Arts and recreation services (-3.7%)
Retail trade (-0.3%)
