Key statistics

In seasonally adjusted terms, the February 2025 monthly business turnover indicator showed:

Rises in six industries, resulting in a 0.2% increase in the 13-industry aggregate
The largest rise was in Manufacturing (+4.6%)
The largest falls were in Arts and recreation services (-2.6%), Mining (-2.5%) and Wholesale trade (-2.0%)

The MBTI 13-industry aggregate grew 0.7% in trend terms for the month of February.

This experimental indicator is derived from Australian Taxation Office (ATO) Business Activity Statements (BAS) turnover data from monthly BAS remitters. It includes 13 of the 19 industry divisions classified according to the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC), 2006.
Monthly BAS reporting covers businesses with GST annual turnover of $20 million or more and a proportion of smaller businesses that report monthly on a voluntary basis.
The estimated monthly changes in business turnover are aligned as closely as is feasible to the Australian System of National Accounts concept of market output. Users should exercise caution in comparing the indicator to other ABS economic outputs due to differences in concepts, scope, coverage, and methods.

Industry analysis and charts

In February 2025, six of the 13 industry divisions included in the indicator showed rises in monthly turnover in seasonally adjusted terms. The most notable rises in monthly turnover were seen in:

Manufacturing (+4.6%)
Transport, postal and warehousing (+2.6%)
Electricity, gas, water and waste services (+2.4%)
Information, media and telecommunications (+2.3%)

The most notable industries that showed falls in February 2025 were:

Arts and recreation services (-2.6%)
Mining (-2.5%)
Wholesale trade (-2.0%)

Year-on-year, 11 of 13 industry divisions recorded rises in business turnover. The largest rises were recorded in:

Manufacturing (+14.2%)
Information, media and telecommunications (+11.3%)
Transport, postal and warehousing (+9.8%)
Electricity, gas, water and waste services (+9.6%)
Construction (+8.8%)

The two industries recording falls in business turnover in February 2025, compared with February 2024 were:

Mining (-6.3%)
Arts and recreation services (-4.7%)
