In seasonally adjusted terms, the August 2024 monthly business turnover indicator showed:

A 0.7% fall in the 13-industry aggregate
The largest falls were in Mining (-3.5%) and Information media and telecommunications (-2.9%)
The largest rises were in Other services (1.5%), Construction (1.3%), and Electricity, gas, water and waste services (1.2%)
Year-on-year, rises were seen in 12 of 13 published industries

The MBTI 13-industry aggregate rose 0.1% in trend terms for the month of August.

This experimental indicator is derived from Australian Taxation Office (ATO) Business Activity Statements (BAS) turnover data from monthly BAS remitters. It includes 13 of the 19 industry divisions classified according to the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC), 2006.
Monthly BAS reporting covers businesses with GST annual turnover of $20 million or more and a proportion of smaller businesses that report monthly on a voluntary basis.
The estimated monthly changes in business turnover are aligned as closely as is feasible to the Australian System of National Accounts concept of market output. Users should exercise caution in comparing the indicator to other ABS economic outputs due to differences in concepts, scope, coverage, and methods.

Industry analysis and charts

In August 2024, seven of the 13 industry divisions included in the indicator showed falls in monthly turnover in seasonally adjusted terms. The largest falls in monthly turnover were seen in:

Mining (-3.5%)
Information media and telecommunications (-2.9%)

The industries that showed the largest rises in August 2024 were:

Other services (1.5%)
Construction (1.3%)
Electricity, gas, water and waste services (1.2%)

Year-on-year, 12 of 13 industry divisions recorded rises in business turnover. The largest rises were recorded in:

Electricity, gas, water and waste services (17.6%)
Information media and telecommunications (8.6%)

The only industry division recording a fall in business turnover was Mining (-5.9%).

Data Notes

Trading days (seasonal adjustment)

Standard ABS seasonal adjustment procedures have been applied to account for the impact of seasonal patterns on the series. The seasonal adjustment includes adjustment for calendar-related effects including trading day influences arising from weekly patterns in sales, the varying length of each month and the varying number of Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, etc. in each month. Subdivisions where the trading day adjustment was not applied were assessed. This has resulted in revisions to divisions B, H, I and M.
