Key statistics

In seasonally adjusted terms, the April 2025 monthly business turnover indicator showed:

Rises in seven industries, resulting in a 0.3% increase in the 13-industry aggregate
The largest rises were in Accommodation and food services (+3.8%) and Arts and recreation services (+3.7%)
The largest falls were in Administrative and support services (-2.1%), Construction and Information media and telecommunications (both -1.1%)

The 13-industry aggregate grew 0.3% in trend terms for the month of April.

This experimental indicator is derived from Australian Taxation Office (ATO) Business Activity Statements (BAS) turnover data from monthly BAS remitters. It includes 13 of the 19 industry divisions classified according to the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC), 2006.
Monthly BAS reporting covers businesses with GST annual turnover of $20 million or more and a proportion of smaller businesses that report monthly on a voluntary basis.
The estimated monthly changes in business turnover are aligned as closely as is feasible to the Australian System of National Accounts concept of market output. Users should exercise caution in comparing the indicator to other ABS economic outputs due to differences in concepts, scope, coverage, and methods.

Industry detail

In April 2025, seven of the 13 industry divisions included in the indicator showed rises in monthly turnover in seasonally adjusted terms. The most notable rises in monthly turnover were seen in:

Accommodation and food services (+3.8%)
Arts and recreation services (+3.7%)
Other services (+1.9%)
Transport, postal and warehousing (+1.8%)
Mining (+1.5%)

The most notable industries that showed falls in April 2025 were:

Administrative and support services (-2.1%)
Construction and Information media and telecommunications (both -1.1%)

Year-on-year, 11 of 13 industry divisions recorded rises in business turnover. The largest rises were recorded in:

Manufacturing (+11.4%)
Accommodation and food services (+10.6%)
Information media and telecommunications (+8.5%)

The two industries recording falls in business turnover in April 2025, compared with April 2024 were:

Mining (-3.1%)
Administrative and support services (-0.8%)
