In the 2011 Census, there were 495,354 people in Tasmania of these 49.0% were male and 51.0% were female. Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people made up 4.0% of the population.

The median age of people in Tasmania was 40 years. Children aged 0 - 14 years made up 19.0% of the population and people aged 65 years and over made up 16.3% of the population.

Of people in Tasmania aged 15 years and over, 47.5% were married and 13.1% were either divorced or separated.

Of employed people in Tasmania, 12.5% worked 1 to 15 hours, 10.7% worked 16 to 24 hours and 39.0% worked 40 hours or more.

The median age of people employed full-time in Tasmania was 42 years and for people who were employed part-time was 42 years.

The most common occupations in Tasmania included Professionals 18.5%, Technicians and Trades Workers 14.8%, Clerical and Administrative Workers 13.8%, Managers 12.4%, Labourers 11.3%, Community and Personal Service Workers 11.1%, Sales Workers 9.7% and Machinery Operators And Drivers 6.7%.

Of the employed people in Tasmania, the most common responses for industry of employment included School Education 5.9%, Cafes, Restaurants and Takeaway Food Services 4.3%, State Government Administration 4.0%, Supermarket and Grocery Stores 2.8% and Residential Care Services 2.8%.

The median weekly personal income for people aged 15 years and over in Tasmania was $499.

In Tasmania, on the day of the Census, the most common methods of travel to work for employed people included Car, as driver 63.1%, Car, as passenger 6.8%, Walked only 5.0%, Bus 2.5% and Truck 0.9%. On the day, 3.2% of employed people used public transport (train, bus, ferry, tram/light rail) as at least one of their methods of travel to work and 70.2% used car (either as driver or as passenger).

Of people who did unpaid domestic work in the week before the Census in Tasmania, 26.6% worked 5 to 14 hours, 13.6% worked 15 to 29 hours and 11.6% worked 30 hours or more.

Family composition

Of the families in Tasmania, 39.7% were couple families with children, 42.1% were couple families without children and 17.0% were one parent families.

In Tasmania 18.5% of single parents were male and 81.5% were female.

People characteristics

In Tasmania, there were 19,625 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. Of these, 9,629 (or 49.1%) were male and 9,996 (or 50.9%) were female. The median age was 22 years.
