In the 2011 Census, there were 4,417 people in Kangaroo Island of these 51.1% were male and 48.9% were female. Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people made up 1.2% of the population.

The median age of people in Kangaroo Island was 46 years. Children aged 0 - 14 years made up 17.9% of the population and people aged 65 years and over made up 17.1% of the population.

Of people in Kangaroo Island aged 15 years and over, 53.8% were married and 14.1% were either divorced or separated.

The median age of married people in Kangaroo Island was 55 years and the median age of people never married was 31 years.

In Kangaroo Island, of people aged 15 years and over, 54.0% of people were in a registered marriage and 13.1% were in a de facto marriage.

There were 2,298 people who reported being in the labour force in the week before Census night in Kangaroo Island. Of these 48.2% were employed full time, 39.7% were employed part-time and 4.3% were unemployed.

Of employed people in Kangaroo Island, 14.0% worked 1 to 15 hours, 13.0% worked 16 to 24 hours and 37.5% worked 40 hours or more.

The median age of people employed full-time in Kangaroo Island was 46 years and for people who were employed part-time was 47 years.

The most common occupations in Kangaroo Island included Managers 25.4%, Labourers 15.1%, Technicians and Trades Workers 12.9%, Community and Personal Service Workers 11.5%, Professionals 11.4%, Clerical and Administrative Workers 9.5%, Sales Workers 8.2% and Machinery Operators And Drivers 4.5%.

Of the employed people in Kangaroo Island, the most common responses for industry of employment included Sheep, Beef Cattle and Grain Farming 14.8%, Accommodation 7.2%, School Education 3.5%, Hospitals 3.4% and Supermarket and Grocery Stores 3.3%.

The median weekly personal income for people aged 15 years and over in Kangaroo Island was $490.

Of the families in Kangaroo Island, 35.4% were couple families with children, 53.7% were couple families without children and 10.2% were one parent families.

In Kangaroo Island 21.1% of single parents were male and 78.9% were female.

People characteristics
