In the 2011 Census, there were 1,977,315 people in Brisbane of these 49.3% were male and 50.7% were female. Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people made up 2.0% of the population.

The median age of people in Brisbane was 35 years. Children aged 0 - 14 years made up 19.9% of the population and people aged 65 years and over made up 11.7% of the population.

Of people in Brisbane aged 15 years and over, 47.1% were married and 11.6% were either divorced or separated.

The median age of married people in Brisbane was 48 years and the median age of people never married was 25 years.

Of employed people in Brisbane, 10.2% worked 1 to 15 hours, 8.9% worked 16 to 24 hours and 45.3% worked 40 hours or more.

The median age of people employed full-time in Brisbane was 40 years and for people who were employed part-time was 37 years.

The most common occupations in Brisbane included Professionals 22.7%, Clerical and Administrative Workers 16.3%, Technicians and Trades Workers 13.4%, Managers 11.5%, Community and Personal Service Workers 9.6%, Sales Workers 9.5%, Labourers 9.0% and Machinery Operators And Drivers 6.2%.

Of the employed people in Brisbane, the most common responses for industry of employment included School Education 4.6%, Hospitals 4.5%, Cafes, Restaurants and Takeaway Food Services 4.2%, State Government Administration 2.7% and Architectural, Engineering and Technical Services 2.6%.

The median weekly personal income for people aged 15 years and over in Brisbane was $640.

In Brisbane, on the day of the Census, the most common methods of travel to work for employed people included Car, as driver 58.4%, Car, as passenger 5.6%, Bus 5.3%, Train 4.1% and Walked only 3.1%. On the day, 13.2% of employed people used public transport (train, bus, ferry, tram/light rail) as at least one of their methods of travel to work and 64.2% used car (either as driver or as passenger).

Of people who did unpaid domestic work in the week before the Census in Brisbane, 27.3% worked 5 to 14 hours, 11.9% worked 15 to 29 hours and 9.4% worked 30 hours or more.

Family composition

Of the families in Brisbane, 45.0% were couple families with children, 36.8% were couple families without children and 16.2% were one parent families.

In Brisbane 17.8% of single parents were male and 82.2% were female.
