In the 2011 Census, there were 304,753 people in Central Coast of these 48.2% were male and 51.8% were female. Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people made up 2.9% of the population.

The median age of people in Central Coast was 41 years. Children aged 0 - 14 years made up 19.4% of the population and people aged 65 years and over made up 19.1% of the population.

Of people in Central Coast aged 15 years and over, 47.4% were married and 14.5% were either divorced or separated.

There were 136,922 people who reported being in the labour force in the week before Census night in Central Coast. Of these 55.6% were employed full time, 31.3% were employed part-time and 7.0% were unemployed.

Of employed people in Central Coast, 12.0% worked 1 to 15 hours, 10.4% worked 16 to 24 hours and 40.8% worked 40 hours or more.

The median age of people employed full-time in Central Coast was 42 years and for people who were employed part-time was 41 years.

The most common occupations in Central Coast included Professionals 17.9%, Technicians and Trades Workers 15.8%, Clerical and Administrative Workers 14.7%, Community and Personal Service Workers 11.6%, Sales Workers 11.4%, Managers 10.6%, Labourers 10.2% and Machinery Operators And Drivers 6.1%.

Of the employed people in Central Coast, the most common responses for industry of employment included School Education 4.5%, Cafes, Restaurants and Takeaway Food Services 4.5%, Hospitals 3.7%, Residential Care Services 3.2% and Supermarket and Grocery Stores 3.1%.

The median weekly personal income for people aged 15 years and over in Central Coast was $500.

In Central Coast, on the day of the Census, the most common methods of travel to work for employed people included Car, as driver 62.7%, Car, as passenger 5.4%, Train 3.8%, Walked only 1.8% and Train, car as driver 1.7%. On the day, 9.0% of employed people used public transport (train, bus, ferry, tram/light rail) as at least one of their methods of travel to work and 68.4% used car (either as driver or as passenger).

During the two weeks before the Census, 28.9% provided care for children and 12.1% assisted family members or others due to a disability, long term illness or problems related to old age. In the year before the Census, 15.6% of people did voluntary work through an organisation or a group.

Of people who did unpaid domestic work in the week before the Census in Central Coast, 25.7% worked 5 to 14 hours, 13.2% worked 15 to 29 hours and 11.2% worked 30 hours or more.

Family composition

Of the families in Central Coast, 41.2% were couple families with children, 37.7% were couple families without children and 19.8% were one parent families.

In Central Coast 16.4% of single parents were male and 83.6% were female.

People characteristics

In Central Coast, there were 8,865 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. Of these, 4,360 (or 49.2%) were male and 4,505 (or 50.8%) were female. The median age was 20 years.
