In the 2006 Census (held on 8th August 2006), there were 1,204 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people usually resident in Broken Hill (C), 49.3% were male and 50.7% were female.

In the 2006 Census, 42.1% of the population usually resident in Broken Hill (C) were Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children aged 0-14 years, 7.2% were aged 55 years and over and the median age was 18 years.

Language diversity

In the 2006 Census, the most common responses for Indigenous language other than English spoken at home by people usually resident in Broken Hill (C) were Ngarrindjeri 0.5%, Aboriginal English, so described 0.2% and Paakantyi 0.2%. English was stated as the only language spoken at home by 92.2% resident in Broken Hill (C)

Employment

During the week prior to the 2006 Census, 320 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, aged 15 years and over in Broken Hill (C) were in the labour force. Of these 77.2% were employed and 22.8% were unemployed. 340 were not in the labour force.

In the 2006 Census, 29.3% of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, aged 15 years and over who were usually resident in Broken Hill (C) had completed Year 10 or equivalent, and 9.2% had completed Year 12 or equivalent. 8.6% aged 15-19 years were in full-time education and 37.2% aged 15 years and over had a qualification.
