MESH BLOCKS

The ABS has developed a micro-level geographical coding system, called Mesh Blocks, which are about four to five times smaller than the Census Collection District. Coding to these units will enable 2005-06 Agricultural Census data to be more accurately compared to other data released at different geographical levels, such as river catchments or natural resource management regions.

Mesh Blocks will become the universal building block for Australia's administrative, political and statistical regions. It is estimated that Australia would be divided into 300,000 Mesh Blocks with each one consisting of approximately 50 households.

As the ABS is bound by legislation to ensure the confidentiality of information provided by respondents restrictions over the release of this data will ensure privacy and confidentiality are maintained. Aggregated Mesh Block data from the 2005-06 Agricultural Census will become available from March 2008.
