Dr David Gruen AO was appointed as the Australian Statistician on 11 December 2019. As Agency Head of the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), he is accountable for the functions and operations of the ABS. David also serves as Head of the Australian Public Service Data Profession, is a director on the board of e61 a non-partisan economic research institute, and Chair of the Sir Roland Wilson Foundation.

David was previously the Deputy Secretary, Economic and Australia's G20 Sherpa at the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. Before joining the Department in September 2014, he was Executive Director of the Macroeconomic Group at the Australian Treasury.

David joined the Treasury in January 2003, before which he was the Head of the Economic Research Department at the Reserve Bank of Australia from 1998 to 2002. Before joining the Reserve Bank, David worked as a research scientist in the Research School of Physical Sciences at the Australian National University. 

With financial support from a Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellowship, David was visiting lecturer in the Economics Department and the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University from August 1991 to June 1993. He holds PhD degrees in physiology from Cambridge University, England and in economics from the Australian National University.

David was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (General Division) in 2022 for distinguished service to public administration, economic research, business, and education.

Dr Phillip Gould is the Deputy Australian Statistician leading the Data Services, Infrastructure and Methods Group.

The Data Services, Infrastructure and Methods Group is responsible for sourcing the data the ABS uses in its work and disseminating the official statistics, data and insights it produces to inform Australia's important decisions. The Group provides statistical infrastructure to support work of the ABS and leads its work to expand and improve data sharing, data integration and microdata access across government. It also provides methodological and data science leadership to the ABS.

Phillip joined the ABS in September 2024 from the Department of Health and Aged Care where he was the Chief Data Officer and First Assistant Secretary for the Health Economics and Research Division. Phillip has worked across the private, university and government sectors, including at the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet with roles in the COVID-19 response taskforce and in establishing the Office of the National Data Commissioner, and previously at the ABS where he helped establish the ABS’s data integration program.

Phillip holds a PhD in Time Series Econometrics and has spent much of his career championing the use of data to inform important decisions.

Mr Brenton Goldsworthy is the Deputy Australian Statistician leading the Insights and Statistics Group. The Insights and Statistics Group has responsibility for coordinating the end-to-end delivery of data services for our clients. This includes producing demographic, economic and social statistics, and the Census. 

Brenton joined the ABS in May 2023 from Treasury, where he held a number of roles including First Assistant Secretary of the Budget Policy Division, head of economic forecasting, and senior representative at the Australian Embassy in Tokyo. Brenton was also the First Assistant Secretary of the Economic Division at Prime Minister and Cabinet, where he supported the Government’s economic response to COVID-19. Brenton also worked at the International Monetary Fund during a 5-year period which included the Global Financial Crisis. Brenton holds a Masters of Economics from the University of Melbourne and a Bachelor of Commerce with Honours from the University of Adelaide.

Ms Elizabeth Williamson is the Deputy Australian Statistician leading the Enterprise Service Group. Elizabeth is also the Chief Operating Officer Chief Audit Executive and Chief Risk Officer at the ABS.

Elizabeth joined the ABS in May 2022 from the Treasury, where she spent much of her career in roles across various economic, fiscal, international and regulatory policy areas, as well as her most recent role as the Chief Operating Officer. Liz has also worked as a Senior Executive in Prime Minister and Cabinet, in the Department of Finance and as a senior ministerial adviser to a former federal Treasurer. She holds a Masters in Government and Commercial Law from the Australian National University and a Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Arts (Hons) from the University of Western Australia.
