Building and construction

The October 2025 seasonally adjusted estimate: 

• Total dwellings approved fell 6.4% to 15,832.
• Private sector dwellings excluding houses fell 13.1% to 6,253 and private sector houses fell 2.1%, to 9,251.
• The value of total residential building fell 11.8% to $9.03b.
• The value of total non-residential building rose 11.6% to $7.13b.

In seasonally adjusted terms in the September quarter:

• Total construction work done fell 0.7% to $79,278.2m
• Building work done rose 4.0% to $43,261.8m
• Engineering work done fell 5.8% to $36,016.3m

The trend estimate for total construction work done rose 0.7% to $78,191.4m.

In seasonally adjusted terms:

• The total number of dwelling units commenced fell 4.4% to 45,156 dwellings.
• New private sector house commencements fell 6.6% to 26,074 dwellings.
• New private sector other residential commencements rose 1.0% to 18,033 dwellings.
• The value of total building work done fell 0.3% to $38.9b.

In the June quarter:

• Seasonally adjusted work done rose 5.4%.
• Seasonally adjusted work done for the private sector rose 12.3%.
• Value of work commenced rose 43.4% in original terms.
• Trend work done fell 2.2%.

• Australia’s dwelling stock was 10,879,349 dwellings at 30 June 2022.

• The net quarterly growth was 38,535 dwellings (0.4%), comprising 45,522 dwelling additions and 6,987 dwelling removals.

• The net quarterly growth of houses, townhouses and apartments was 23,456 (0.3%), 6,713 (0.5%) and 8,361 (0.5%) respectively. 

• 80.6% of in-scope land parcels were zoned residential, with 600 - 800 square metres the most common size
• 59.5% of new dwellings in-scope were approved for land zoned residential, with 200 - 400 square metres the most common area per dwelling
