Key statistics

  • Total selected industries operating profit before tax (OPBT) declined $12.2b (-1.9%).
  • The Mining industry had the largest fall in OPBT of $32.9b (-19.1%), while the Rental, hiring and real estate services industry had the largest increase of $20.2b (47.6%).
  • Excluding the Mining industry, OPBT rose $20.6b (4.4%). Health care and social assistance (Private) increased OPBT by $6.0b (15.9%) and Construction grew $5.2b (9.0%).
  • Total selected industries Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) decreased $17.2b (-2.2%).

Industry summary

Total earnings across the selected industries fell $17.2b (-2.2%). The largest fall was seen in the Mining industry (-$47.4b, -20.5%). Despite the overall fall, 16 of the 19 industries reported a rise in earnings. The largest growth in earnings was seen in the Transport, postal and warehousing industry ($4.1b), followed by the Construction industry ($3.8b).

Business performance by Employment range

  • In 2024-25, businesses of all Employment ranges recorded increases in most key data items.
  • Businesses with over 200 employees reported the largest movement for most key data items. These businesses increased Employment (123,000 people, 2.6%), Wages and salaries ($27.4b, 7.1%) and Total income ($81.8b, 3.6%). 
  • Businesses with 0-4 employees recorded the largest percentage increases for most key data items. These businesses saw the fastest growth in Employment (3.2%), Wages and salaries (7.8%) and Sales and service income (5.9%).

State and territory performance

In 2024-25, east coast states New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland accounted for the largest share of each of the three key state economic indicators: Sales and service income, Wages and salaries and Employment.

State and territory growth

  • All states and territories recorded growth in the three key state economic indicators for Total selected industries.
  • New South Wales showed the largest growth in Sales and service income (4.8%, $74.9b), driven by growth amongst Manufacturing (9.5%, $14.5b) and Construction (6.6%, $13.8b).
  • Wages and salaries increased across all states and territories, with the largest increase in New South Wales (5.7%, $16.1b).
  • Employment increased for all states and territories, with the strongest increase in Queensland (3.4%, 89,000 people).

  • New South Wales had the largest growth in Sales and service income with a $74.9b (4.8%) increase, followed by Victoria and Queensland, growing $40.8b (3.4%) and $31.5b (3.2%) respectively.
  • Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory showed the lowest growth in Sales and service income, recording rises of $1.8b (3.7%) and $2.3b (3.9%) respectively.

Scope

Includes the activity of most businesses operating in the Australian economy. Businesses excluded include:  

  • most entities in general government. 
  • entities in defence, finance, insurance and superannuation, and public administration industries. 

Geography

All data is available for
