Key statistics

In the March quarter 2026: 

  • there were 49,295 persons in custody, up 4% (1,916 persons) from the December quarter 2025 and up 7% (3,214 persons) from the March quarter 2025
  • unsentenced prisoners increased by 9% (1,674 persons) from the December quarter 2025 to 21,286 persons
  • the imprisonment rate was 225 persons per 100,000 adult population, up from 217 persons in the December quarter 2025.

Persons in custody

There were 49,295 prisoners (average daily number), up:

  • 4% (1,916 persons) from 47,379 in the December quarter 2025
  • 7% (3,214 persons) from 46,081 in the March quarter 2025.

Imprisonment rates

The imprisonment rate was 225 persons per 100,000 adult population, up from:

  • 217 persons in the December quarter 2025 
  • 214 persons in the March quarter 2025.

Sex

Of all prisoners:

  • 92% (45,335) were male
  • 8% (3,959) were female.

The imprisonment rate for:

  • males was 421 per 100,000 adult male population, up from 406 last quarter
  • females was 36 per 100,000 adult female population, up from 35 last quarter.

     

Type of custody

Of all prisoners:

  • 84% (41,516) were in secure custody
  • 16% (7,779) were in open custody.

     

Legal status

27,543 (56%) of the 48,923 prisoners (first day of the month) were sentenced:

  • down slightly (42 persons) from 27,585 in the December quarter 2025
  • up 4% (1,040 persons) from 26,503 in the March quarter 2025.

21,286 (44%) of the 48,923 prisoners (first day of the month) were unsentenced, up:

  • 9% (1,674 persons) from 19,612 in the December quarter 2025
  • 11% (2,167 persons) from 19,119 in the March quarter 2025.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons in custody

There were 18,272 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners (average daily number), up:

  • 5% (924 persons) from 17,348 in the December quarter 2025
  • 8% (1,396 persons) from 16,876 in the March quarter 2025. 

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners accounted for 37% of all persons in custody.

 

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander imprisonment rates

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander imprisonment rate was 2,701 persons per 100,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adult population, up from:

  • 2,630 in the December quarter 2025
  • 2,559 in the March quarter 2025.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander imprisonment rate for:

  • males was 4,898 per 100,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adult male population, up from 4,774 last quarter
  • females was 549 per 100,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adult female population, up from 535 last quarter.

Federal sentenced persons in custody

There were 1,259 federal sentenced prisoners:

  • down 1% (14 persons) from 1,273 in the December quarter 2025
  • up 2% (23 persons) from 1,236 in the March quarter 2025.

Prisoner receptions and releases

The total number of prisoner receptions was 21,022, up: 

  • 1% (251 receptions) from 20,771 in the December quarter 2025
  • 10% (1,907 receptions) from 19,115 in the March quarter 2025.

The total number of prisoner releases was 19,241:

  • down 3% (657 releases) from 19,898 in the December quarter 2025
  • up 10% (1,730 releases) from 17,511 in the March quarter 2025.

Community-based corrections

Persons in community-based corrections

There were 80,845 persons (first day of the month) serving community-based corrections (CBC) orders, down:

  • 1% (852 persons) from 81,697 in the December quarter 2025
  • 1% (934 persons) from 81,779 in the March quarter 2025.

Rates for persons in community-based corrections

The rate of persons serving CBC orders was 369 persons per 100,000 adult population, down from: 

  • 375 in the December quarter 2025
  • 380 in the March quarter 2025.

Sex

Of all persons serving CBC orders:

  • 81% (65,225) were male
  • 19% (15,567) were female.

The rate of persons serving CBC orders for: 

  • males was 606 per 100,000 adult male population, down from 615 last quarter
  • females was 140 per 100,000 adult female population, down from 142 last quarter.

     

Type of community-based corrections orders

There were 55,423 sentenced probation orders, down:

  • 1% (834 orders) from 56,257 in the December quarter 2025
  • 2% (1,358 orders) from 56,781 in the March quarter 2025.

There were 18,334 parole orders:

  • down slightly (75 orders) from 18,409 in the December quarter 2025
  • up 2% (435 orders) from 17,899 in the March quarter 2025.

There were 11,800 community service orders, down:

  • 4% (460 orders) from 12,260 in the December quarter 2025
  • 8% (1,003 orders) from 12,803 in the March quarter 2025.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons serving community-based corrections orders

There were 22,505 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons serving CBC orders:

  • down slightly (29 persons) from 22,534 in the December quarter 2025
  • up 3% (592 persons) from 21,913 in the March quarter 2025.

Rates for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons in community-based corrections

The rate of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons serving CBC orders was 3,327 persons per 100,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adult population: 

  • down from 3,417 in the December quarter 2025
  • up from 3,323 in the March quarter 2025.

The rate of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons serving CBC orders for: 

  • males was 4,996 per 100,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adult male population, down from 5,124 last quarter
  • females was 1,690 per 100,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adult female population, down from 1,746 last quarter.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons serving community-based corrections orders, type of orders

There were 15,091 sentenced probation orders:

  • down 1% (127 orders) from 15,218 in the December quarter 2025
  • up slightly (58 orders) from 15,033 in the March quarter 2026.

There were 5,791 parole orders, up:

  • slightly (15 orders) from 5,776 in the December quarter 2025
  • 8% (442 orders) from 5,349 in the March quarter 2025.

There were 2,632 community service orders, down:

  • 3% (93 orders) from 2,725 in the December quarter 2025
  • 10% (304 orders) from 2,936 in the March quarter 2025.
