The OSCA Coder

The Occupation Standard Classification for Australia (OSCA) Coder is a Windows-based structured coding system to code occupation information to OSCA 2024 v1.0.

Using the Coder

The OSCA Coder incorporates detailed coding indexes (extensive lists of occupation titles) which support consistent coding of multiple records to the occupation (6-digit) level of this classification.

Using the OSCA Coder does not require a detailed knowledge of the classification structure nor of the composition of the Australian labour force. The OSCA Coder assigns codes according to strictly prescribed rules, most of which are incorporated into the Coder.

The Coder is available on request as a set of downloadable files.

Tutorial

To learn to code occupation information properly it is recommended to complete the lessons within the Tutorial, included in the downloadable files.

There are seven lessons covering the main coding procedures. Each lesson contains an explanation of the procedures covered in that lesson. Coding examples and exercises are included in each lesson to reinforce these procedures. Additional coding exercises and the solutions to all coding exercises are also provided.

Updates

The OSCA Coder will be updated periodically via the ABS website.
