Purpose of the Post Census Test Review

Post Census Test Review (the Review) provides an important check on the Census Test by determining how many people we counted more than once or missed completely.

Your participation helps us to plan for and improve the next Census.

The Census, Post Census Review and Census testing support important decisions, for example, where we need more schools, hospitals, and other services.

We value your time participating in this Review. It is only with the support of people like you that we can continue to produce the statistics that inform Australia's important decisions.

How we collect and keep your information private

The ABS takes the privacy and security of your information very seriously. The  2026 Census: 2025 Test Collection Notice explains how we collect personal information for the Review in compliance with the Australian Privacy Principle 5 (Privacy Act, 1988). To view our Privacy Policy for Statistical Information visit www.abs.gov.au/privacy.

How to complete your Post Census Test Review

Choose someone from your household, over the age of 15, to be your household representative. They can call us on 1800 143 967 to complete the Review over the phone with an interviewer.

We will ask you a few questions to quickly check the Census Test information we have is accurate. For most people it takes less than 10 minutes to complete.

Please note you cannot complete the Review online or on paper – you need to complete it with an interviewer.

How we selected your household

You may remember we asked you to participate in the 2025 Census Test. We chose Census Test areas using past Census data to make sure we captured information from all types of Australians.

We are now asking a sample of households selected for the Census to complete the Review. This is your last step.

If we don’t hear from you, an interviewer may contact you to help you complete your Review.

The legal authority for the Review

We ask the questions included in the Review under the authority of the Census and Statistics Act 1905. The Act ensures we keep all information strictly confidential and only use the information for statistical purposes. We conduct follow-up of delayed responses, and we can help you if you have any difficulties.

Non-English-speaking households

If you need help to complete this Review, please call us on 1800 143 967 (free call, excluding mobile phones) to speak to us. An ABS interviewer who speaks the language of the householder will conduct the interview if possible. Alternatively, we can help to organise an interpreter from the Australian Government’s Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS) to conduct the interview.

How to know if the person contacting you is from the Australian Bureau of Statistics

If we have selected your household in the Review, we will send you a letter and brochure informing you of your selection and how to complete the review.

The ABS will only call you if you contact us and leave a phone number to reach you. If you leave your number, you may receive calls from numbers that you are not familiar with, including mobile phones or ‘unknown’ numbers. Our interviewers only use ABS authorised phones to conduct interviews. The ABS will never ask you to provide or confirm your bank details or tax file number (TFN).

If you have any concerns, you can call us on 1800 143 967 and we can confirm your selection in the Review and the identity of the staff member who is contacting you.

ABS interviewers are here to help. Please treat them with courtesy and consideration.
