It’s National Volunteer Week and time to celebrate Aussies who give their time and skills to help those in need by giving back to their local communities.

According to 2016 Census data, over 3.6 million people said they had volunteered in the past year.

Andrew Henderson, Census Executive Director and National Spokesperson said, “National Volunteer Week is a good time to recognise our volunteers and acknowledge the important role the Census plays in providing a comprehensive picture of volunteering in Australia.

“The Census provides information on more than just the numbers of volunteers, it helps us understand their characteristics like where they live, how old they are, occupation and country of birth.

“Census data is also vital for organisations that rely on volunteers as it informs where services and funding are needed most,” he added.

Mike Duggan, Chief Operating Officer for Orange Sky said, “Census data is critical for Orange Sky to make data driven decisions that help us to focus our resources on providing services where and when they are needed most across the country for people experiencing homelessness.

“Orange Sky Australia relies on volunteers to deliver its services including driving its vans, which are kitted out with washing machines and dryers and some of them with showers.”

Important community services rely on good quality data, the Australian Bureau of Statistics is preparing to deliver the 2021 Census so that these vital services have up to date and comprehensive information.

“People will be able to complete the Census online, on their mobile device, or on paper. There will be options available for people who need assistance to complete their Census form including help from Census field staff, and phone and online help,” Mr Henderson said.
