PRIVATE NON-PROFIT EXPENDITURE ON R&D (PNPERD)

TYPE OF EXPENDITURE

In 2014-15, PNPERD included $954 million (95%) in total Current expenditure and $53 million (5%) in total Capital expenditure. The largest component of PNPERD in 2014-15 was Labour costs, at $540 million (54% of PNPERD). This was followed by Other current expenditure, at $423 million (41% of PNPERD) which recorded the largest increase in PNPERD, up $35 million (7%) from 2012-13.

SOURCE OF FUNDS

In 2014-15, Commonwealth government funds was the largest contributing Source of funds to total PNPERD, at $386 million (38% of total PNPERD), followed by Own funds, at $230 million (23% of total PNPERD).

Of all sources of funds, State and local government recorded the largest dollar increase from 2012-13, up $20 million (25%). This was followed by Business funds, up $10 million (20%) in 2014-15. Joint government and business funds recorded the largest dollar decrease, down $5 million (54%) between 2012-13 and 2014-15.

LOCATION OF EXPENDITURE

Location of expenditure relates to the region in which R&D activity was performed; see Explanatory Notes for details.

In 2014-15, Victoria ($486 million) and New South Wales ($331 million) together accounted for 81% of total PNPERD. Victoria, up $38 million (8%) and Queensland, up $13 million (47%) recorded the largest dollar increases in PNPERD from 2012-13. New South Wales recorded the largest dollar decrease, down $22 million (6%) between 2012-13 and 2014-15.

PNPERD and Gross State Product (GSP)

In 2014-15, PNPERD as a proportion of Gross State Product (GSP) was highest for Victoria at 0.13%.

TYPE OF ACTIVITY

In 2014-15, over two thirds (70%) of PNPERD was directed towards Strategic basic research, at $361 million (36% of total PNPERD) and Applied research, at $347 million (35% of total PNPERD). The remaining expenditure was directed towards Experimental development, at $218 million (22%) and Pure basic research, at $81 million (8%).

Compared to 2012-13, Strategic basic research recorded the largest dollar increase, up $27 million (8%). Pure basic research recorded the largest dollar and percentage decrease down $7 million or 8% from 2012-13. The distribution of PNPERD across Type of activity remained largely unchanged in 2014-15.


FIELDS OF RESEARCH (FOR)

Medical and Health Sciences ($788 million) remained the largest Field of Research for PNP organisations in 2014-15, accounting for more than three quarters (78%) of total PNPERD. The next largest Field of Research was Biological Sciences, which accounted for $57 million (6% of total PNPERD).

The largest dollar increase in PNPERD in 2014-15 was recorded by Medical and Health Sciences, up $38 million (5%). The largest dollar decrease in PNPERD was recorded by Biological Sciences, down $19 million (25%).


SOCIO-ECONOMIC OBJECTIVE (SEO)

The majority of PNPERD (85%) was directed to the Socio-economic Objective of Health ($859 million) in 2014-15. Education and Training was the next largest Socio-economic Objective, with $65 million (7% of total PNPERD).

Health, up $35 million (4%) and Education and Training, up $9 million (16%) also recorded the largest dollar increases among Socio-economic Objectives between 2012-13 and 2014-15. Law, Politics and Community Services recorded the largest dollar decrease, down $3 million (45%).
