FAMILY TYPE

In 2012, a higher proportion of children with disability lived in single parent families (128,000 or 34% of all children with disability in this age group) compared with children who had no disability (18%) (Graph 2).

The significance of this is that such households tend to have lower incomes compared with other households with children of the same age (Endnote 2). A greater proportion of these families depend on government benefits and allowances than other types of families (Endnote 3).

In addition, there may be fewer adult resources within the family to cater to the higher needs of a child with disability.
