During a life span, disability can occur at any age and for any number of reasons. While we tend to associate disability with older people, in 2012 there were approximately 379,000 children with disability (7.3%) under the age of 18 years, living in Australia. This compares with 351,600 children (6.9%) with a disability in 2009.

Children with disabilities are typically living at home, going to school, socialising and, for those who are older, preparing to meet the challenges and opportunities of adulthood.

This article is about children with disability aged 0-17 years.
