WELCOME

Welcome to the June 2005 issue of Age Matters.

This year marks the centenary of the Australian Bureau of Statistics. In 1905, the Census and Statistics Act was passed by the Parliament of Australia to enable national coordination of statistical collections. That same year, a Commonwealth Royal Commission on old-age pensions was appointed as there was no national system for the provision of old-age pensions for Australians.

To mark both centenaries, this issue of Age Matters contains an article examining life for older persons (aged 65 years and over) a hundred years ago compared with today. Other articles of interest in this issue of Age Matters include:

  • An update on the Information Development Plan activities.
  • Free ABS publications available on the ABS website.

I hope you continue to find this newsletter a valuable resource. Any comments or suggestions on improving our newsletter are always welcome.
