Data Professional Stream
The Data Professional Stream is an opportunity to drive collaboration across the Australian Public Service (APS) to build data capability.
At the centre of the initiative is the Data Profession Strategy (the Strategy) which addresses the need to strengthen data capability overall as well as build niche expertise for sophisticated data users. It aims to lift the data capability of the APS workforce through defining professional data standards, increasing diversity and mobility of people in data roles, and creating career pathways and development opportunities.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of using data to better understand and respond to the needs of Australians. It has committed to ensuring the APS has the right capability, tools and processes to securely use, share and understand data and other sources of information for better policy advice, regulation and services.
Leading the way
The Data Professional Stream is a partnership between the Australian Public Service Commission (APSC) and the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). The ABS is proud to be leading the Data Professional Stream with Australian Statistician, Dr David Gruen, championing the Data Professional Stream Strategy (the ‘Strategy’) as Head of Profession.
“Data is more important than ever, and maintaining the public’s trust is a critical enabler in ensuring that quality information is available for informed decision making and service delivery.
“We have an opportunity to work together to support innovative ways to collect, share and use data responsibly to meet the needs of the day.” – Dr David Gruen
We all have a responsibility to use data to better support the work of our agencies, and inform service delivery, policy and program decisions to meet the needs of Australians. The Data Professional Stream aims to benefit all data producers and users across the APS.
The power in the Data Professional Stream lies in its collaborative nature to share knowledge, with everyone from graduates to those experienced in working with data over their career.
A professional network has been established to guide and share professional data standards and best practise – and we want you to be part of it.
