Dairying is predominantly located along the coastal fringes of the state; however, the highest concentration of milk cattle is found in the Murray Statistical Division (SD).

The NSW milk cattle herd stood at 399,000 at 30 June 2005.

At 30 June 2005, 21% of milk cattle in NSW were found in the Murray SD (82,400). This was followed by the Mid-North Coast SD with 59,900.
