This group covers R&D directed towards mining and extracting energy mineral resources, as well as the extraction of geothermal energy.
This group has six objectives:

    850201 Coal Mining and Extraction
    850202 Geothermal Energy Extraction
    850203 Oil and Gas Extraction
    850204 Oil Shale and Tar Sands Mining and Extraction
    850205 Uranium Mining and Extraction
    850299 Mining and Extraction of Energy Resources not elsewhere classified

    Exclusions:
    a) Mining and extraction of non-energy mineral resources are included in Group 8402 Primary Mining and Extraction of Mineral Resources.
    b) Air quality; control of pests, diseases and exotic species; ecosystem assessment and management; flora, fauna and biodiversity; land and water management; rehabilitation of degraded areas; remnant vegetation and conservation areas; soils; and natural hazards in mining environments are included in Division 96 Environment.
