Dairying is predominantly located along the coastal fringes of the state; the highest concentrations of milk cattle are found in the Murray, Mid-North Coast and Hunter Statistical Divisions (SDs).

The NSW milk cattle herd stood at 400,000 at 30 June 2004.

In 2003-04, 22% of milk cattle in NSW were found in the Murray SD (88,000). This was followed by the Mid-North Coast SD with 62,000.
