This division covers R&D directed towards refining and developing processes or strategies for transforming processed or unprocessed materials or components into new products.
It also includes R&D directed towards environmentally sustainable production of manufactured products and materials.
This division has nineteen groups.

Exclusions:
a) Production of unprocessed or semi-processed plant primary products is included in Division 82 Plant Production and Plant Primary Products.
b) Production of animals from which raw materials for manufactured products are obtained are included in Division 83 Animal Production and Animal Primary Products.
c) Mining, extraction, and first stage processing of minerals are included in Division 84 Mineral Resources (excl. Energy Resources).
d) Energy conservation and efficiency and the mining, extraction, and processing of energy resources used for the manufacture of products are included in Division 85 Energy.
e) The construction of transport infrastructure, installation of communication equipment and testing of the performance, durability and life cycle of manufactured building materials is included in Division 87 Construction.
f) Transport infrastructure (excluding its construction) is included in Division 88 Transport.
g) Use of electronic and communication equipment in communication networks and services is included in Group 8901 Communication Networks and Services.
h) Development of computer software and the provision of programming services are included in Group 8902 Computer Software and Services.
i) Printing and publishing of newspapers is included in Group 8904 Media Services.
j) Waste handling services such as collection, storage, recycling and disposal provided by local councils or private or non-profit waste management businesses are included in Group 9004 Water and Waste Services.
k) Provision of measurement standards and calibration services for machinery, appliances and equipment is included in Group 9105 Measurement Standards and Calibration Services.
l) Use of human pharmaceutical products for treatment of human diseases and disorders and manufacturing related environmental health issues are included in the Division 92 Health.
