This division covers R&D which primarily benefits or has application to the exploration, mining, extraction and processing of mineral resources, other than energy mineral resources. It includes R&D directed towards environmentally sustainable exploration, extraction and processing of mineral resources.
This division has five groups.

8401 Mineral Exploration
8402 Primary Mining and Extraction of Mineral Resources
8403 First Stage Treatment of Ores and Minerals
8498 Environmentally Sustainable Mineral Resource Activities
8499 Other Mineral Resources (excl. Energy Resources)

Exclusions:
a) Exploration, mining, extraction, and preparation of energy mineral resources and energy conservation and efficiency are included in Division 85 Energy.
b) Manufacture of processed products from mineral resources, including refining and smelting, is included in Division 86 Manufacturing.
c) Air quality; control of pests, diseases and exotic species; ecosystem assessment and management; flora, fauna and biodiversity; land and water management; rehabilitation of degraded areas; remnant vegetation and conservation areas; soils; and natural hazards in mining environments are included in Division 96 Environment.
