This division covers R&D directed towards construction activities.
It includes:
- use and performance of building materials and the processes for which they are used;
- functions of engineering, planning, design, management and building services in the construction industry;
- development and supply of components and materials which are assembled and placed on site to form buildings, but manufactured off-site;
- design, supply and installation of building services; and
- environmental sustainability of construction activities.
This division has seven groups.

Exclusions:
a) Energy conservation and efficiency in construction activities is included in Group 8507 Energy Conservation and Efficiency.
b) Manufacture of materials used in construction is included in the appropriate groups in Division 86 Manufacturing.
c) Transport planning unrelated to urban planning is included in Division 88 Transport.
d) Provision of communications services is included in Group 8901 Communication Networks and Services.
e) Property services (e.g. property developers, real estate agents, alarm and surveillance services) are included in Group 9002 Property, Business Support Services and Trade.
f) Waste handling services such as collection, storage, recycling and disposal provided by local councils or private or non-profit waste management businesses are included in Group 9004 Water and Waste Services.
g) Construction related environmental health issues are included in Group 9204 Public Health (excl. Specific Population Health).
h) Conservation of historic buildings and structures and heritage aspects of urban and regional planning are included in Group 9503 Heritage.
i) Air quality; control of pests, diseases and exotic species; ecosystem assessment and management; environmental and natural resource evaluation; environmental policy, legislation and standards; flora, fauna and biodiversity; land and water management; rehabilitation of degraded areas; remnant vegetation and conservation areas; soils; and natural hazards in urban and industrial environments or other environments affected by construction activities are included in Division 96 Environment.
