2001 Census - Wednesday launch MEDIA ALERT... 2001 Census - Wednesday launch Australia’s biggest national event, the 2001 Census, will officially commence tomorrow - Wednesday 25 July in Darwin. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) conducts the Census every five years and counts everyone in Australia. It’s the only event in Australia that includes every man, woman and child. What's on offer: A launch event where the national advertising campaign (which starts nationally on Thursday 26 July) will be unveiled by the Hon Joe Hockey MP, Minister for Financial Services and Regulation. This will signal the start of the Census. The delivery of the nation's first census form will follow - The Minister will farewell Dennis Trewin, Australian Statistician, as he delivers the first census form, one of over nine million, out to one of the country's most isolated communities - the employees of the Paspaley Pearl Farm at Port Bremer (one hour by seaplane north east of Darwin).
