The chart below shows the trend series and seasonally adjusted series to December 2010.

In current prices, the trend estimate for Australian turnover fell 0.1% in December following a relatively unchanged November 2010 (0.0%) and October 2010 (0.0%).

The seasonally adjusted estimate for Australian turnover rose 0.2% in December 2010 following a rise of 0.4% in November 2010 and a fall of 0.9% in October 2010.

The original estimate for Australian turnover rose 25.8% in December 2010. The original estimate for chains and other larger retailers rose 29.5% in December 2010. The original estimate for smaller retailers rose 19.3% in December 2010.

TOTAL RETAIL - QUARTERLY

In volume terms, the seasonally adjusted estimate for the December quarter 2010 fell 0.3% following a rise of 0.5% in the September quarter 2010 and a rise of 0.8% in the June quarter 2010.

In the December quarter 2010, the seasonally adjusted estimate fell in volume terms for Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services (-4.7%), Other retailing (-1.1%), Clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing (-0.6%), Food retailing (-0.1%) and Department stores (-0.3%). The seasonally adjusted estimate rose in volume terms for Household goods retailing (3.1%) in the December quarter 2010.

The Implicit Price Deflator for Australian retail turnover fell 0.1% in seasonally adjusted terms in the December quarter 2010.


TOTAL RETAIL - BY STATE

The following states and territories fell in trend terms in December 2010: New South Wales (-0.2%), South Australia (-0.4%), the Northern Territory (-1.2%) and Tasmania (-0.1%). Queensland (0.0%) was relatively unchanged. Victoria (0.1%), Western Australia (0.1%) and the Australian Capital Territory (0.3%) rose in trend terms in December 2010.

The following states and territories rose in seasonally adjusted terms in December 2010: Victoria (0.5%), New South Wales (0.4%), Queensland (0.3%) and the Northern Territory (0.2%). South Australia (-1.3%), Tasmania (-1.3%), Western Australia (-0.2%) and the Australian Capital Territory (-0.5%) fell in seasonally adjusted terms in December 2010.

In the December quarter 2010, the seasonally adjusted estimate fell in volume terms for New South Wales (-0.7%), Queensland (-0.8%), South Australia (-0.6%) and the Northern Territory (-4.1%). The seasonally adjusted estimate rose in volume terms for Western Australia (0.6%), Victoria (0.1%), the Australian Capital Territory (1.2%) and Tasmania (0.6%) in the December quarter 2010.
