ABS CPI September quarter 2013 rises 1.2 per cent The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 1.2 per cent in the September quarter 2013, compared with a rise of 0.4 percent in the June quarter 2013. Prices increased for a wide range of products. The most significant price rises in the September quarter 2013 were for automotive fuel (+7.6%), international holiday travel and accommodation (+6.1%), electricity (+4.4%), property rates and charges (+7.9%), water and sewerage (+9.9%) and domestic holiday travel and accommodation (+3.5%).The most significant offsetting price fall was for vegetables (–4.5%). International holiday travel and accommodation prices increased 6.1 per cent primarily due to increased airfare prices to most destinations coinciding with the shoulder/peak season in Asia, Europe and America. Domestic holiday travel and accommodation increased 3.5 per cent primarily due to airfare price increases. Higher jet fuel prices contributed to airfare price rises. Electricity and water and sewerage prices increased in the September quarter 2013 because of a range of factors which varied from state to state. Property rates and charges increased 7.9 per cent as a result of the annual review of rates charged by local councils. The CPI rose 2.2 per cent through the year to the September quarter 2013, compared with a rise of 2.4 per cent through the year to the June quarter 2013.
