CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE
CUSTOMS TARIFF
From the January 2018 issue of this publication, there will be numerous changes to export statistical codes in the Australian Harmonized Export Commodity Classification (AHECC) - Electronic Publication (cat. no. 1233.0) and import statistical codes in the Combined Australian Customs Tariff Nomenclature and Statistical Classification (Working Tariff). These changes led to statistical codes closing on 31 December 2017 and new replacement codes opening on 1 January 2018. All changes were updated in December 2017 on the ABS Website in appendices 6.1 and 6.2 of the International Merchandise Trade, Australia: Concepts, Sources and Methods, 2015 (cat. no. 5489.0). In addition, exports changes were updated in the Australian Harmonized Export Commodity Classification (AHECC) - Electronic Publication (cat. no. 1233.0) and imports changes were updated on the Department of Home Affairs (Home Affairs) website in the Working Tariff.
Reasons for the changes include:
- The International Chemical Weapons Convention
In order for Australia to comply with the International Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), in consultation with Home Affairs, have implemented changes for both import and export statistical codes. As a result Chapters 28, 29, 30 and 38 have been impacted.
Following a review by Home Affairs and the ABS, changes have been applied to import statistical codes in Chapter 76 in relation to aluminium panels.
- Pork Imports Classification Feasibility Study
The ABS has conducted a Classification Feasibility Study that resulted in changes to pork import classifications from Chapter 16.
