IN THIS ISSUE

This publication brings together statistics for live births and fertility in Australia. Data refer to births registered during the calendar year shown, unless otherwise stated. State or territory relates to the state or territory of usual residence, unless otherwise stated.

RANDOMISED DATA

To protect confidentiality, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has adopted a technique to randomly adjust cells with small values. Cells with a value of zero have not been affected by this randomisation. As a result, sums of components may not add exactly to totals. The technique has been applied to all data issued in this release with the exception of median age calculations and any sub-state data. These very minor adjustments allow for a greater amount of data to be released, and as they are small, do not affect the utility of the data.

CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE

Revisions to data: This issue contains revisions to age-specific fertility rates and total fertility rates, due to revisions to the previously published Estimated Resident Population (ERP) for 2012-2016, due to final rebasing of Australia's population estimates using the 2016 Census. Revisions are reflected in the following data cubes and ABS.Stat tables:

    • Data cube 1: Births, Summary, Statistical Area Level 4 - 2011 to 2017
    • Data cube 2: Births, Summary, Statistical Area Level 2 - 2011 to 2017
    • Data cube 3: Births Summary, Local Government Areas - 2011 to 2017
    • Data cube 4: Births, Summary, Remoteness Areas - 2011 to 2017
    • Data cube 5: Births, Summary, Remoteness Areas by Indigenous Status - 2011 to 2017
    • ABS.Stat 1: Births, Summary, by State
    • ABS.Stat 2: Fertility, by Age, by State
    • ABS.Stat 5: Paternity, by age, by state
    • ABS.Stat 10: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander fertility, by age, by state.

Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) 2016: All data for the following data cubes is presented according to the 2016 edition of the ASGS, which refers to boundaries as defined at 1 July 2016:
    • Data cube 1: Births, Summary, Statistical Area Level 4 - 2011 to 2017
    • Data cube 2: Births, Summary, Statistical Area Level 2 - 2011 to 2017
    • Data cube 4: Births, Summary, Remoteness Areas - 2011 to 2017
    • Data cube 5: Births, Summary, Remoteness Areas, Indigenous Status - 2011 to 2017.

Data for the following data cube is presented according to the 2017 edition of ASGS Non ABS Structures:
  • Data cube 3: Births, Summary, Local Government Areas - 2011 to 2017.

2016 POPULATIONS USED IN THIS RELEASE

ERPs for 30 June 2017 (preliminary status) used in this release are based on the results of the 2016 Census and are as follows:

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population data is based on the 2011 Census for 2012-2017 reference years, for the following ABS.Stat tables:
    • ABS.Stat 9: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander births and confinements, summary, by state – 2001 to 2017
    • ABS.Stat 10: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander fertility, by age, by state – 2001 to 2017.
For more information see Estimates and Projections, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians, 2001 to 2026 (cat. no. 3238.0).

ERP by Country of Birth for Australia ( preliminary status) for 30 June 2017 is based on the results of the 2016 Census for the following data cube table:
    • Data cube 6: Births, Country of Birth of Parents, Australian - 2017.

For more information see Migration, Australia, 2016-2017 (cat. no. 3412.0) released on 27 July 2018.

ROUNDING

Calculations as shown in the commentary sections of this publication are based on unrounded figures. Calculations undertaken by data users using rounded figures may differ from those published. Where figures have been rounded in tables, discrepancies may occur between sums of component items and totals.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The ABS values the efforts of the Registries of Births, Deaths and Marriages to improve the data quality, coverage and timeliness of birth registration information, processes and systems.

CONFIDENTIALITY

Where necessary, tables have had small values suppressed or randomised to protect confidentiality. As a result, sums of components may not add exactly to totals. These very minor adjustments allow for a greater amount of detailed data to be released, and as they are small, do not affect the utility of the data.
