ABOUT THIS PUBLICATION

This publication presents results from the Attitudes to the Environment Survey, a topic on the Multipurpose Household Survey (MPHS) conducted throughout Australia from July 2011 to June 2012. The Attitudes to the Environment Survey collects information from individuals aged 18 years and over about their views and practices on environmental issues over a 12 month period prior to the date of interview. Data from this survey is used to better understand people's environmental concerns, their conservation practices at home, and their environmental involvement.

The survey includes a number of terms which are left to the respondent's interpretation. In addition, the Attitudes to the Environment Survey asks respondents to self assess their environmental behaviours and practices. These factors should be considered when interpreting the estimates in this publication.

Tables of data estimates and their corresponding relative standard errors are available in a Data Cube (spreadsheet format) and can be accessed in the Downloads tab.

DATA COMPARABILITY

Data from the Attitudes to the Environment Survey was last collected in the 2007–08 financial year. The 2007–08 publication can be accessed in the Past & Future Releases tab of the 2011–12 publication. See paragraph 19 of the Explanatory Notes for information on the differences between the 2007–08 publication and the current edition.

For the first time, this survey includes households residing in very remote areas of Australia. The inclusion has minimal impact on Australian level estimates.

ROUNDING

As estimates have been rounded, discrepancies may occur between sums of the component items and totals. Published proportions are calculated prior to rounding the estimates and therefore some discrepancy may occur between these proportions and those that are calculated from the rounded estimates.
