AGGREGATE SENTENCE LENGTH

Aggregate sentence length applies only to the federal prisoner population.

For all of the selected states and territories, a majority of federal prisoners had an aggregate sentence length of five to under ten years.

Federal prisoners in South Australia had the lowest median aggregate sentence length (24 months), while those in New South Wales had the highest (84 months). This compares to the median aggregate sentence length in the overall prisoner population of 43 months in New South Wales and 54 months in South Australia (Table 37 and 26).
