COUNTRY OF BIRTH

The majority of federal prisoners in Western Australia (72%), the Northern Territory (71%), and New South Wales (64%) had a country of birth other than Australia. For both Queensland and South Australia, 54% of federal prisoners were born in Australia. (Table 38)

This compares to the overall prisoner population where the majority of prisoners had a country of birth of Australia, ranging between 75% in New South Wales to 97% in the Northern Territory. (Table 23)
