Privacy and Security

The ABS takes data security very seriously. The protection of privacy is our highest priority. This research is undertaken only by approved users within a secure ABS environment. All administrative data projects comply with legislation, including the Census and Statistics Act 1905 and the Privacy Act 1988.

The electricity consumption data is collected under the Census and Statistics Act 1905 for statistical analysis only, and will never be used for compliance purposes.

The data used for this analysis is only accessible to ABS staff directly assigned to this project. The data received by the ABS does not contain personal information such as name or client information. Address and other identifiers relating to the meter servicing the premise are removed and replaced with an anonymised identifier prior to any analysis.

The anonymised identifier can only be associated to an area level geography and prevents ABS analysts from identifying the exact location of any meter in the dataset. This allows ABS analysts to produce aggregated area level geographic statistics whilst minimising privacy risks.
