In 2001-02, the Office of the Tasmanian Ombudsman closed 194 complaints about the administrative actions of local government authorities. This was a 22.8% increase from the 158 complaints closed in 2000-01, and a 7.2% increase from the 181 complaints closed in 1999-2000.
In 2001-02, the Greater Hobart-Southern Region recorded the greatest number of complaints closed with 106, representing 54.6% of all complaints closed in the state, followed by the Northern Region with 46 (23.7%) and then Mersey-Lyell with 42 (21.7%). The Mersey-Lyell Region had the highest proportion of claims closed due to no defective administration (35.7%) and the highest proportion of claims substantiated or partly substantiated (11.9%).
