HIGHER EDUCATION RESOURCES DEVOTED TO RESEARCH AND EXPERIMENTAL DEVELOPMENT (R&D)

During the 2014 calendar year, higher education expenditure on R&D (HERD) was $10,145 million. This represents an increase of $535 million (6%) from $9,610 million in 2012.

HERD and Gross Domestic Product (GDP)

HERD as a proportion of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) stayed the same for 2012 and 2014 at 0.63%.

Human resources devoted to R&D by Australian higher education institutions totalled 78,038 person years of effort (PYE) in 2014. This is an increase of 3,369 PYE (5%) from 74,669 PYE in 2012.
