In 2017-18:

• The number of people living in Greater Melbourne increased by 119,400 (2.5%), while the number living outside the capital city increased by 19,600 people (1.3%).

• Greater Melbourne's growth rate fell from 2.7% in 2016-17.

Largest growth areas: The Statistical Area Level 2 (SA2) of Cranbourne East, in Melbourne's outer south-east (up by 7,300 people), followed by the inner-city SA2 of Melbourne (3,800) and Tarneit in the city's outer west (3,700).

Fastest growth areas: Rockbank - Mount Cottrell in Melbourne's outer west (59%), followed by Mickleham - Yuroke (52%) in the outer north, and Cranbourne East (21%).

Regional growth areas: Outside of Greater Melbourne, the Geelong suburb of Grovedale had both the largest (2,000 people) and fastest (7.7%) population increase.
