Australia's 13th Census of Population and Housing was conducted on Tuesday the 6th August 1996.

The products and reference information released from the 1996 Census include:

Basic Community Profile for Australia
This profile contains 32 tables of quite detailed data covering dwelling and household topics (eg. tenure type, household income), person topics (eg. age, income, birthplace, occupation) and family topics.

State and Summary extracts
These extracts contain a summary of findings and selected characteristics for Australia and each State. They also key Census information for each State ranked by Statistical Local Areas. eg Total Number of Persons, Percentage Full Home Ownership, Median Personal Income, Median Age.

Australia in Profile - A Regional Analysis
This publication presents commentary and data on a number of key social indicators from the Census with the focus on regional distribution and comparisons. Topics covered include cultural diversity, living arrangements, education, work and housing. The publication also includes ranked tables, maps and graphs and is designed for the general user of Census data.

CData96
Developed jointly by the Australian Bureau of Statistics and MapInfo Australia, CDATA96 is a powerful desktop software package that allows users to analyse and display comprehensive 1996 Census data in detailed maps, graphs and reports. The ABS no longer sells or supports this product.


1996 Census Dictionary
This publication provides users of census data with a comprehensive reference document for the Census of Population and Housing. The dictionary contains the details of the classifications used in the 1996 Census along with definitions of census concepts and terms.

Census Working Papers
A series of working papers were produced to assess and report on various aspects of the 1996 Census, particularly data quality. Several census topics were examined in detail and the impact of form design, collection procedures and data processing on data quality will be evaluated.

Directory of Census Statistics
This publication contains a description of the range of publications, electronic products, maps and consultancy services available from the 1996 Census.

1996 Census Household form
This document contains an exact replication of the Household Form from the 1996 Census of Population and Housing.
Basic Community Profiles for other areas
The complete 1996 Census BCPs available free of charge from 24 June, 2002. They are available for States, Statistical Divisions, Statistical Subdivisions and Statistical Local Areas.

Urban Centre and Localities extracts
This publication contains Census characteristics for Urban Centres and Localities within Australia. The top 200 Urban Centres and Localities are ranked based on selected person, family and dwelling characteristics. Commentary is provided, including a state or territory summary.

Family and Labour Force extracts
These extracts contains data from the 1996 Census of Population and Housing, and describe household, family and labour force characteristics for Australia and each state. It is just a sample of what is available in the publication series Census of Population and Housing: Selected Family and Labour Force Characteristics for Statistical Local Areas (Cat. nos 2017.0-8)

Socio-Economic Areas for Indexes (SEIFA96)
SEIFA96 allows users to investigate the socio-economic well-being of Australian communities and identify areas of advantage and disadvantage. SEIFA96 summarises information from the 1996 Census into five separate indexes that each concentrate on a different aspect of the social and economic conditions in an area.

Census Fact Sheets
Census Fact Sheets are a quick reference product, one to two pages long, designed to assist in the use and interpretation of Census data. They provide a summary of conceptual and data issues, and any changes that have occurred since the last Census.

1996 Household Sample File (HSF)
This publication is contains the technical information about the 1996 HSF. The HSF is a comprehensive Confidentialised Unit Record File (CURF) of census characteristics, containing a one percent random sample of private households and associated persons, and a one percent random sample of persons in non-private dwellings.

Counting the Homeless
This publication reports on a research project to analyse information on the homeless population in Australia using 1996 Census data and administrative data.
