Census job opportunities in Perth24 March 2014 | WA/62
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has announced the creation of over 40 short-term jobs in Perth, to support a Census field test in the lead up to the 2016 Census of Population and Housing.
Western Australia Regional Director, Tom Joseph, said Census field staff play a critical role in the quality and accuracy of the data collected in the Census.
“In 2016, field staff will perform a different role than they have traditionally played in the Census, but they will be just as important,” Mr Joseph said.
The ABS is changing the way it conducts the Census in 2016, with more than 65 per cent of households expected to participate online.
“The ABS will be using more technology in the 2016 Census, and as a result, Census field staff will too,” Mr Joseph added.
Census field staff are required for a variety of short-term supervisory and non-supervisory jobs between April and September 2014. These non-office jobs require work in urban, rural and remote communities.
The rates of pay range from $20 to $34 (including casual loading) per hour, plus allowances.
Around 5 Census Area Supervisors and 35 Census Field Officers will be hired, throughout selected areas of Perth.
Census Area Supervisors will train, lead and supervise a team of Census Field Officers, and perform routine clerical and other operational tasks. Census Field Officers deliver Census materials, conduct personal interviews and make follow-up house calls.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old, be an Australian citizen, and able to commit between 25 to 35 hours a week, including days, evenings, weekends and holidays as required. They will need a driver’s licence and access to a vehicle in some areas.
Applicants must be computer literate and ideally have a home computer with access to the internet.
“Working on the Census is a wonderful opportunity for everyday Australians to contribute to their community,” Mr Joseph said.
Applicant Information Kits are available from the ABS website, and candidates can apply online at www.abs.gov.au/careers
