Third release of 2011 Census data begins tomorrow

27 March 2013 | CO/70

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) will release the third round of data from the 2011 Census of Population and Housing tomorrow morning at 11:30am (AEDST).

Third release Census data includes the latest Socio-Economic Indexes for Areas (SEIFA) product and new Remoteness Area Level data which will include updates to Census QuickStats, Community Profiles and DataPacks.

SEIFA is a product developed by the ABS that ranks areas in Australia according to relative socio-economic advantage and disadvantage. For the purposes of SEIFA, the ABS defines relative socio-economic advantage and disadvantage in terms of people’s access to material and social resources, and their ability to participate in society.

Director, Analytical Services Branch, Dr Phillip Gould, says SEIFA offers new insights into the socio-economic aspects of Census data, helping plan a brighter future for Australia.

“People are more interested in understanding the picture that the Census paints, rather than just looking at aggregated answers to 50 individual questions on socio-economic conditions,” Dr Gould said.

“This is what SEIFA does, it summarises relevant Census data to measure and rank areas according to their levels of advantage and disadvantage.

“SEIFA can be used by government, business and communities to determine areas that require additional funding and improved services, identify potential business opportunities and research the relationship between health and education outcomes and the socio-economic conditions of an area.”

For the first time, anyone can freely download files which allow them to display SEIFA data using Google Earth®, which makes interpretation easier than ever.

Data from the 2011 Census of Population and Housing is now available on the ABS website. Our range of new, easy-to-use tools makes searching Census data quick and easy. Visit www.abs.gov.au/census.
