2011 Census - even when you're flying

5 August 2011 | CO/43

International tourists and Australians returning from overseas on Tuesday, 9 August 2011 will be included in the Census of Population and Housing.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has been working with the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service for the past year to ensure that everyone in Australia on Census night is accurately counted.

Head of the Population Census program, Paul Lowe says international arrivals and Australians returning from overseas will be informed of their Census obligations when they land in Australia.

Mr Lowe says Census Collectors will visit every Australian hotel and motel to deliver Census forms and eCensus envelopes so everyone in Australia on Census night is counted.

“If you’re staying in a hotel, a Census form will be waiting for you when you check in. If you’re heading home after your international flight a Census form will already have been delivered to your address,” Mr Lowe adds.

People leaving Australia or overseas on Census night, Tuesday 9 August 2011 are not required to complete a Census form.

More information is available online at www.abs.gov.au/census or call the Census Inquiry Service on 1300 338 776.

Key Census dates:

  • 9 August 2011 – Census night.
