2011 Census - privacy steps

3 August 2011 | CO/41

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has always taken privacy very seriously.

Without Australia’s full confidence that their information is safe, the Census couldn’t happen.

To ensure your Census information remains confidential, the ABS is reminding households not to leave their completed Census forms outside.

Head of the Population Census program, Paul Lowe says completed Census forms should be handed back to a Collector.

“Your Census form contains personal, confidential information. You would never leave your wallet or purse on your front step, so please don’t leave your completed Census form there.”

“Alternatively Australians can use eCensus, the convenient online way to complete your Census form. It’s fast, easy and secure and your Collector will not have to return to your house to collect your Census form,” Mr Lowe says.

It’s expected that 30 per cent of the population will use the eCensus.

More information is available online at www.abs.gov.au/census or call the Census Inquiry Service on 1300 338 776.

Key Census dates:

  • 9 August 2011 – Census night.
  • From 10 August – Collection of Census forms.
