AUSSTATS, Statistics On Your Desktop
New technology developed by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) allows access to a huge volume of statistical information from the desktop of an online computer.
The new service, AusStats, is the key to a wealth of reliable and authoritative statistical information in a convenient and timely form for the Australian community, business and government.
All ABS publications from 1998 onwards can be accessed along with an expanded range of detailed data in spreadsheet format and the powerful new SuperTABLE application.
The service allows users to access time-critical ABS data at any online location within seconds of its release, and access to a range of data sources through a single system. A wide variety of data is available in detailed time series that go back more than 20 years.
The data in SuperTABLE format conveniently allows statistics users to build their own tables, defining the classifications and time periods they need.
Once a subscription has been purchased, all users need to access AusStats is a connection to the world wide web, an Internet browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape, plus Adobe Acrobat and a suitable spreadsheet package. SuperTABLE, available free from www.str.com.au, is needed in order to take advantage of this powerful tabulation package.
Summary information for many statistical releases is still available free of charge through the ABS web site. This media release is available on the Internet at www.abs.gov.au.
A one week trial of AusStats can be arranged for interested media.
