This group covers R&D directed towards an understanding of natural hazards (such as bushfire, cyclones and storms, earthquakes, landslides, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions), their impact on lives, property and environments and the development of warning systems and control measures to minimise impacts from these hazards.
This group has eleven objectives:

    961002 Natural Hazards in Coastal and Estuarine Environments
    961003 Natural Hazards in Farmland, Arable Cropland and Permanent Cropland Environments
    961004 Natural Hazards in Forest and Woodlands Environments
    961005 Natural Hazards in Fresh, Ground and Surface Water Environments
    961006 Natural Hazards in Marine Environments
    961007 Natural Hazards in Mining Environments
    961008 Natural Hazards in Mountain and High Country Environments
    961009 Natural Hazards in Sparseland, Permanent Grassland and Arid Zone Environments
    961010 Natural Hazards in Urban and Industrial Environments
    961099 Natural Hazards not elsewhere classified

    Exclusions:
    a) Forest fire management relating to the protection of timber plantations and logging activities in native forests is included in Group 8201 Forestry.
    b) Natural hazards arising from the effects of climate change are included in Group 9603 Climate and Climate Change.
